A Day in the Life of an IPAF Trainee
Prep
While there are no formal entry requirements for IPAF training, some preparation certainly helps, especially if you have little to no prior experience. Familiarising yourself with basic health and safety principles, common types of MEWPS, and standard site procedures can provide a solid foundation before your training begins.
You may also find it helpful to watch a few instructional videos or research the IPAF categories (such as 3A, 3B, and 1B*) to familiarise yourself with the types of machines you’ll be training on.
Just remember, the more you prepare, the more confident and capable you will feel during the IPAF course.
*3A – Mobile Vertical, 3B – Mobile Boom, 1B – Static Boom
Let’s get into what you should expect on an IPAF course
A typical day of IPAF training focuses on both theoretical learning and hands-on practical experience, building your skills in a controlled and safe environment.
Theory:
The training begins in the morning with the theory part of the course, where you’ll complete a structured modular programme that covers:
- Introduction to course objectives and training facilities
- Overview of health, fitness, and PPE requirements for MEWP operation
- Introduction to the ePAL app for digital certification and operator logbooks
- Summary of key legislation and regulations related to MEWP operator training
- Identification and description of different types of MEWPs and their uses
- Conducting pre-use inspections, performing safety checks, and understanding emergency procedures.
You’ll complete detailed, category-specific modules tailored to the MEWP category (as spoken about above) covering hazard identification, machine setup, and typical applications. Regardless of the category, you will also undertake a safe operations module, which includes task planning, machine selection, PPE checks, harness use, rescue planning, and the six key risk areas.
IPAF E-Learning
Can’t make it to the theory session? Check out e-learning instead!
Don’t worry if you can’t take a whole day off to complete your training. We offer e-learning, allowing you to complete the theory part of your training at your own pace and from the comfort of your own home, which takes approximately 3 hours.
Practical training:
The afternoon is dedicated to practical exercises, giving you hands-on experience operating MEWPs under the guidance of our experienced instructors. During this session, you’ll gain confidence and competence in areas like:
- Carrying out comprehensive site risk assessments
- Performing thorough pre-use checks and equipment inspections
- Safely operating, manoeuvring, and positioning MEWPs in various environments
- Executing practical, real-world tasks using MEWPs under supervision
At the end of each training, you’ll have an assessment to test what you have learnt. Successful candidates will receive a digital PAL Card through the ePAL app, which is a globally recognised qualification required by employers.
